Why You're Not Playing: Honest Self-Assessment in College Soccer

In the world of college soccer, self-awareness is everything. We’ve seen many players struggle with limited playing time, yet still believe they’re ready for the next level. The hard truth is, if you were performing at the level expected, you’d be getting more minutes. Understanding your own level is crucial to unlocking your potential and making real progress.

Why Aren’t You Playing?

If you’re not seeing the field as much as you’d like, it’s important to ask why. College coaches don’t have the luxury of experimentation—they need to win games. For many of them, their jobs are on the line every season. They’re not just benching you out of preference or oversight; they’re making decisions based on who will give the team the best chance to succeed. This isn’t about talent alone—it’s about consistency, discipline, and results.

Many of these players were the stars of their club teams, often the best players on the field. Now, however, they find themselves in a new environment where everyone else was likely the best player on their own club teams as well. The competition is fierce, and this new reality can be a tough adjustment.

The Importance of Honest Self-Assessment

One of the most important steps a player can take is conducting an honest self-assessment. Are you outworking the players ahead of you? Do you understand your weaknesses and how they affect your chances of playing? Many athletes fail to recognize that their current level just isn’t where it needs to be for more playing time. This isn’t a reflection of your future potential, but it is a sign that there’s work to be done.

The players who thrive are the ones who can take a critical look at themselves, figure out what’s missing, and put in the effort to close that gap. It’s not about comparing yourself to others out of frustration—it’s about recognizing that coaches need results. They’ll play the players who give them the best shot at winning, period.

What You Can Do

Instead of waiting for the opportunity to come, ask yourself: What can I do better? Are there technical skills that need refining? Could your fitness level improve? Or is it about showing more focus in practice? By taking responsibility for your development, you give yourself the best shot at breaking into the lineup.

Being realistic doesn’t mean giving up on your dreams. In fact, it’s the opposite. It’s about being clear on what’s required to reach them. The sooner you understand where you truly stand, the sooner you can start working toward the player you want to become.
